SOA Strategies Drive BEA, IONA, Jayway, Eclipse and Interface21 to Join OSGi(TM) Alliance

SAN RAMON, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- The OSGi Alliance announced today that five new members joined the alliance following its recent initiatives in the enterprise applications market. OSGi specifications enhance the service-oriented architecture (SOA) strategy driving server-side businesses today, modularizing and componentizing Java(TM) applications and allowing applications to be adapted remotely and in real time. These new members will help the alliance drive adoption of the OSGi Service Platform in enterprises and other markets.

BEA Systems, IONA Technologies, Jayway AB, Eclipse and Interface21 -- developer of the Spring Framework -- use the Java platform and OSGi specifications. BEA, IONA and Jayway are part of the alliance's Enterprise Expert Group (EEG) charged with enhancing OSGi specifications for enterprise application.

"OSGi Alliance membership, paired with active participation in the Enterprise Expert Group, is integral to the service-oriented architecture strategy we announced last fall," said John Wells of BEA Systems. "The OSGi framework is the heart of BEA WebLogic Platform's backplane components."

OSGi technology is a component integration platform with a service-oriented architecture and lifecycle capabilities that enable dynamic delivery of services. These capabilities greatly increase the value of a wide range of computers and devices that use the Java platform. The OSGi specifications provide the platform for universal middleware and are deployed by Fortune 100 companies in home, automotive, mobile and enterprise markets.

"We're already working with OSGi technology as part of the Eclipse Foundation's SOA Tools Platform Project and in our Eclipse-based tooling for Artix and Celtix, and we plan to support OSGi packaging and deployment in those products. OSGi technology is an important part of helping our customers deploy a more standard SOA," said Eric Newcomer, chief technology officer, IONA, and EEG co-chair. "IONA's participation in the EEG is in line with our heritage of delivering standards-based technology to help our customers solve their complex computing challenges."

The Eclipse open source community has hundreds of organizations that use the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP), based on OSGi technology, to build desktop applications. Eclipse Equinox is also positioned to emerge as a platform for server-side applications.

The OSGi Developer's Conference, co-located with EclipseCon 2007 and scheduled for March 5-8, features a series of tutorials and sessions that highlights the capabilities of the OSGi Service Platform, with an emphasis on how the OSGi Service Platform can be used as a key component in enterprise Java systems. Interface21's Spring framework complements OSGi technology's component- and module-based framework. Spring applications can be delivered as OSGi bundles, creating interest among developers working with both frameworks.
