Nuage Networks unveils new open software-based solution

Apr 17, 2013 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- Nuage Networks, an Alcatel-Lucent venture focused on software-defined networking, or SDN, solutions, has unveiled the Virtualized Services Platform, or VSP, an open software-based solution to address the datacenter network constraints that limit cloud services adoption.

The VSP will allow healthcare, banking, utilities and other enterprise market segments, as well as webscale companies - internet-based companies - and telecom service providers, to scale their cloud offers and provide connectivity to multiple customers.

Trials of the Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Platform begin in April in Europe and North America. Trial customers include UK cloud service provider Exponential-e, French telecoms service provider SFR, Canadian telecoms service provider TELUS and a US healthcare provider, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Worldwide commercial availability is planned for mid-2013.

VSP automates the entire datacenter network, creating 'slices' for each customer, changing provisioning time from days to minutes. VSP also scales to support datacenters with thousands of customers, each with thousands of users.

According to the company, VSP provides an open, software-only solution that works with OpenStack, CloudStack and VMware cloud environments and any datacenter network switches. VSP delivers network connectivity inside the datacenter, between datacenters as well as datacenter to Enterprise VPN connectivity and improves network utilization and efficiency by up to 40% according to Bell Labs studies.

Michel Combes, new CEO of Alcatel-Lucent said: "It's exciting to start my first day as CEO of Alcatel-Lucent with an announcement that expands our addressable market. Alcatel-Lucent's SDN strategy and the Nuage Networks branded portfolio announced today builds on the cloud orchestration we already provide with our CloudBand Management System. We are very well positioned to help telecom and cloud service providers build large scale cloud infrastructure and services, opening up new revenue opportunities for our customers and ourselves." Sunil Khandekar, CEO of Nuage Networks, said, "SDN is one of the most exciting and promising new technologies in datacenter networking. At Nuage Networks, we're focused on getting the network out of the way so that it no longer constrains the server and storage resources or the performance of cloud services. We do that by offering a platform that is technology and layer agnostic. As more companies move to a cloud service environment, we can help them automate their networks to deliver instant connectivity to their customers." http://www.datamonitor.com Republication or redistribution, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited without prior written consent. WebRTC Security Concerns

This whitepaper covers two of the most relevant topics in communications industry today: WebRTC and security. We will introduce the problem of security in WebRTC including those traditional VoIP attacks that are going to be present in WebRTC services. Later we will mention ad-hoc WebRTC attacks and protection mechanisms, to close with an overview of identity management solutions.

Migrating Real Time Communications Services to the Web

In the Internet age, businesses that own fixed and mobile communication networks, including traditional Communications Service Providers (CSPs) of all kinds, are being challenged with some tough questions: How do we stay relevant to our customers?

Delivering Enterprise-Class Communications with WebRTC

WebRTC is an emerging industry standard for enabling Web browsers with real-time communications capabilities. It enables enterprises to enhance Web sites, empower BYOD users, and improve video collaboration and on-line meetings, to name but a few examples.

WebRTC Report Extract Reprint

This document examines the growing important of WebRTC, both generally and for telecom service providers. It considers the expanding range of use-cases, the multiple layers of interoperability likely to be desired by telcos, and some implications in terms of network integration and mobility.

Robust Enterprise Grade WebRTC Systems and Services

The emerging WebRTC standard has become one of the industry's hottest topics – and with good reason. Being able to "communications enable the web" has Communications Service Providers as well as Enterprises busily making plans for deployment. But, as these plans unfold, reality is starting to intrude on those plans. Our expectations of telephony services are much higher than web browsing. We expect the phone to connect instantly, operate with minimal disruption, and work seamless across any network, anywhere, at any time. There is also an understanding that phone service is inherently secure. With WebRTC, the expectation is for these applications to behave in the same manner.

This session looks at the user experience and expectations of a WebRTC Enterprise service. It will also cover how a WebRTC enterprise handles security, reliability, and interoperability within browsers and networks.

ORACLE COMMUNICATIONS WEBRTC SESSION CONTROLLER SOLUTION

Communication Service Provider (CSP) voice service revenues continue to face pressure due to shifts in communication preferences and competition from non-traditional service providers. Voice communications are now often embedded into applications outside the domain of traditional telephony voice usage. CSPs have been challenged to effectively leverage and monetize new web-oriented communications technologies.
