Polycom Amps up Real-Time Collaboration and User Experiences with Three New Solutions
It may sound a bit archaic, but when you think about it, the conference room quality speakerphone was the first real-time collaboration tool designed for business. Thus, it probably is no surprise that from its roots as the dominant player in the enterprise speakerphone systems market and then the video conferencing sector as well that Polycom would evolve into a supplier of a myriad of real-time collaboration solutions.
Indeed, the company continues to be a market innovator in the broadly defined human collaboration space with the announcement of three new solutions for its flagship Polycom® RealPresence® Platform—which provides seamless connectivity for real-time interactions which such capabilities as virtual meeting rooms, directory services with presence, video network management tools, and a full suite of B2B and B2C video collaboration capabilities. New members of the RealPresence Platform are:
- Polycom® RealPresence® Web Suite
- Polycom® RealPresence® Media Suite
- Polycom® RealPresence® Cloud
Making human presence and collaboration easier, secure and extensible
A brief look under the hood of each is in order since the enhancements cover a broad landscape of functionality.
Polycom® RealPresence® Web Suite: combines Polycom’s video collaboration capabilities with the flexibility of Web conferencing. Key features cited include:
- Rich Multi-Content Collaboration: The ability to share, view, compare and annotate multiple documents at the same time.
- Plug-In Free Experience: Automatic connectivity to people via WebRTC, and the enablement of large-scale enterprise WebRTC deployments.
- Secure Shared Workspace: Attachment of multiple documents when scheduling or during a meeting.
- Virtual Whiteboard/Blackboard: Designed to facilitate real time sharing, and the ability to save, of virtual meeting creative sessions.
- Superior Meeting Experiences: Leveraging directory integration and click-to-connect easy host of meetings with anyone using comprehensive roster control, muting, group chat and in-meeting invites
Polycom® RealPresence® Media Suite: An easy-to-use recording and webcasting portal that allows users to record, share, stream and playback full-motion videos during meetings using a Web browser. It replaces the need for multiple applications such as webcasting portals and e-learning tools. It can provide network-based recording for up to 100 concurrent video sessions, stream up to 50 live events and reach up to 10,000 viewers through live webcasts and recorded videos.
Polycom® RealPresence® Cloud: Provides cloud-based global access to a simple, flexible, mobile-friendly cloud video collaboration service that is accessible via a Web browser, Skype for Business or standards-based H.323 and SIP compliant codecs. A subscription to RealPresence Cloud includes licenses for other solutions on the RealPresence Platform, including the Polycom® RealPresence® Desktop and Polycom® RealPresence® Mobile software applications. The service will be delivered by select Polycom partners and includes enhanced support tools and an analytics module for partners to gain business intelligence to help better serve their customers.
Commenting on the new capabilities which are now generally available, Ashan Willy, Polycom Senior Vice President of Worldwide Systems Engineering and Product Management, Polycom said: “Polycom is creating new experiences that enhance the way people work, without changing the way they are used to working.” He added that, “Productivity is redefined when collaboration tools are easy to use and integrated into the daily workflow. Accessibility and integration matter. Experience matters. Productivity and efficiency matter. The market is changing, and today’s announcement is symbolic of our mission to meet those needs by taking collaboration beyond the walls of the traditional office and making it easier and more intuitive.”
For those in the WebRTC Solutions Community, obviously the terms “simple” and “via a browser” are more than a bit familiar. Reality is that when it comes to collaboration real-time may not be the only time but in a world where responsiveness is at a premium it is the best time.
Having the ability to interoperate with anyone on any device on any network using any protocol is the kind of extensibility that enterprises are seeking in their real-time communications and collaboration solutions. The hassle of having islands of communications is no longer an alternative.
Looking to WebRTC for ease-of-use and broad reach and adding on interoperability with other collaboration environments is one of the reasons many industry observers have become bullish on unified communications (UC) adoption in general. And, the addition of high quality, secure web-based multiple media conferencing specifically is poised to become the dominant mode of business interactions be they B2B or even B2C. After years of unfulfilled promise WebRTC-friendliness is becoming a critical component in driving UC adoption in a real-time centric world.
