Deutsche Telekom Launches Messaging App in Albania
Jibe—which supports WebRTC in its application—has announced that Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary Telekom Albania has launched its own rich IP communications service backed by Jibe’s IP Communications Cloud.
Telekom Albania’s app for iPhone and Android replaces the native messaging app in the user’s phone with one that offers video chat, video sharing, photo sharing and instant messaging in addition to SMS and MMS messaging to people inside and outside the network.
"Carriers of all sizes and in many different locations around the globe have selected Jibe Mobile as their RCS Cloud Platform," said Amir Sarhangi, co-founder and CEO of Jibe Mobile. "This launch builds on increasing RCS momentum and shows carrier commitment to bring the most advanced standards-based messaging to their subscribers."
Over-the-top messaging apps like WhatsApp and Skype are popular in Europe because there are a lot more countries in the same land mass compared to North America. A European is more likely to have contacts in different countries. These apps let users avoid long distance calls on voice and texts when calling different countries.
While they represent a serious threat to carrier revenues, Deutsche Telekom seems to be taking an “if you can’t beat them, join them” approach, offering its own OTT messaging app.
The launch of the Jibe-based app follows similar apps Deutsche Telekom has launched in Romania and Slovakia, both also based on Jibe.
"Launching rich carrier-driven communications services powered by Jibe in Albania, following our successful launches in Romania and Slovakia, is another step in Deutsche Telekom's expansion of IP communication for our customers throughout Europe," said Kobus, head of voice and messaging at Deutsche Telekom and chair of the IP communications leadership team for the GSMA. "Jibe's centralized cloud architecture is bringing significant improvement in efficiency and much faster time to market when launching RCS in multiple geographies. Based on this success, Deutsche Telekom will interconnect with other local and international carriers via Jibe's Cloud and RCS Hub."
