Japan Communications Inc. Licenses Imagination's ClearCall

April 28, 2015

Japan Communications Inc. (JCI) has announced that it has licensed Imagination Technology’s ClearCall VoIP software.

"JCI offers the widest mobile coverage in Japan and we are constantly expanding our coverage around the globe. We are dedicated to providing our customers with the most cutting-edge, advanced mobile technology,” JCI executive vice president and representative director Naohisa Fukuda said. “We selected Imagination's ClearCall VoIP client as the engine inside our forthcoming JTalk VoIP client because it is an advanced VoIP solution with the best performance, lowest power consumption and superior voice quality that is already proven on multiple platforms."

ClearCall offers voice and video chat with enhanced quality. The company’s Android and iOS applications are powered by WebRTC.

JCI will provide the technology through its JTalk application, which the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) will deploy to its business customers. JTalk users will be able to make calls via Wi-Fi as well as 3G and 4G networks.

Japan has been ahead of the West in terms of mobile adoption, especially with SMS and mobile Internet, and if the deal between JCI and Imagination is any indication of what’s to come, the country looks to remain ahead of the curve in adoption of WebRTC on mobile devices as well. Videoconferencing is already popular there, which has been attributed to the Japanese culture’s preference for face-to-face communication.

"Our ClearCall IP builds on Imagination's many years' experience in delivering high-quality VoIP solutions, as well as our extensive knowledge of voice and video processing, gained from solutions already shipped in millions of devices worldwide,” Krishna Raghavan, vice president of VoIP business operations for Imagination, said. “We are delighted that JCI, one of the world's leading MVNOs, has chosen our latest ClearCall technology for its new VoIP service that it will be rolling out to its customers. We believe their customers will appreciate the higher quality voice calls, advanced features and multi-platform support that ClearCall delivers."
